(Scare School Diaries) – By Jarrett Lerner

It has been true joy to watch Jarrett Lerner’s author/illustrator journey unfold.   He started out writing several graphic novel series, including The EngiNerds and The Hunger Heroes.   My personal favorites include his Nat the Cat early reader series and his novel “A Work in Progress”.

His latest book is part of a new series – Welcome To Scare School ( Scare School Diaries) which was published this past July. Jarett is an artist and an author and his books are a sweet mix of clever illustrations, doodles, comic book layouts and text.  He knows how to graphically engage a reader – their head and their heart!

Bash is a ghost who will now be attending Scare School – away from home.  At Scare School, he’ll learn how to be a ghost. But to learn how to be a ghost he must pass a test in which he can complete two of his own special creature skills.  This, of course, adds pressure and fear to the ‘new school’ experience.  Along the way, Bash meets new friends, including Itsy ( a spider), Mimi ( a snot monster), Zara ( a zombie) and Mumford ( a mummy).  Like any new school experience, Bash has his own fears to face and skills to learn.  But he isn’t alone. The hilarious and tender relationship with his new friends provides support and encouragement as he makes some decisions about his future and tackles obstacles.

Jarrett Lerner is so clever with the dialogue and drawings.  Students will not only care about what happens to Bash, but they will be able to relate to his worries and insecurities.  Especially, when it comes to new situations and individuals, as well as seeing how to build one’s confidence and tenacity. They will be cheering for Bash as he works to complete his ‘test – flying through walls and becoming invisible.

Thank you, Jarrett!  Can’t wait to read the next one in the series.

By the way, you’ll want to stop by his website https://jarrettlerner.com.  He has incredible  ART activities for kids, as well as other uplifting graphics!
