By Barbara Dee
I loved this book from page 1. In typical Barbara Dee fashion, you are drawn in to a story that speaks to the heart. In this case, meet Lyla, a seventh grader who loves to write.
Not only is Lyla writing a book, but transitioning to a new school and also living in the shadow of an older sister.
Lyla’s voice is so real, honest and genuine. Barbara Dee showcases, through Lyla’s journey, how life is a process and we all need support. Lyla has this incredible teacher who I just want to clone! Ms. Bowman not only sees her student, but takes time for her. She gently supports Lyla and gives her strategies to work through the process of not only writing, but life’s challenges.
This quote is indicative of Ms. Bowman and her teaching style ( page 2):
“I wonder if Ms. Bowman would let me keep writing. I bet she would, once she sees who much there is to tell, because she is the kind of teacher who lets you actually CREATE. Unlike Mr. Delgado last year, who made us write five-paragraph essays on topics like Why Kids Need Limits on Screen Time. I mean literally – five paragraphs, not four or six. Once I actually wrote seven paragraphs and he made me smoosh them together so that I had exactly five. It’s amazing I survived sixth grade without my brain leaking out my ears.”
Readers will relate to Lyla. Her voice. Her struggles. Her desire to fit in and have friends. Her voice resonates because she is craving what we all want – to be heard and seen and valued for her own gift. Unstuck is a must buy. 💜💜💜💜💜
Final favorite quote:
“What would it be like if people didn’t expect stuff, didn’t assign words like “superstars” or “weirdos”? “Jocks” and “brains” also. Vanguards and Scribes, too, actually. Words that get you stuck and decide your fate forever. Unless someone rescues you. Or you escape.” ( page 198)
