This is my first Jessica Vitalis book and I am a FAN! I loved her latest book, Coyote Queen.
The main character, Fud, is living in a trailer, outside of town, with her mom and her mom’s boyfriend. From the first chapter, it’s evident that life with Larry, her mom’s boyfriend, is filled with emotional and physical abuse, as well as constant fear. Every day is filled with the ‘what if’s’ of Larry’s unpredictable behavior and unprovoked outbursts. So, when neighbors move in to the trailer nearby, Fud finds friendship with Leigh and her mom, Click. She is fed, safe, cared about and seen.
Fud’s journey of finding a way out is layered with magic, heartache and healing. It is genuine and speaks truth.
Ms. Vitalis’ writing reminds me of authors Megan E. Freeman and Dusti Bowling. From page one, I could see and hear Fud. She is such a unique individual, who is on one hand dodging this horrific situation at home, then trying to confront the mean girls of 7th grade and then becoming immersed in the lives of the coyotes. She so tries to navigate a problem that it bigger than any child should ever have to face.
In her author’s notes, Ms. Vitalis talks about the quote “Our stories shape us.” Watching Fud walk through heartbreaking life experiences, yet also find her way was affirming. It’s not an easy path, or one that neatly solves all problems. But it’s life. It’s the power of HOPE when we believe in ourselves and are fortunate enough to find support along the way.
Coyote Queen publishes on October 10, 2023.
