By Megan E. Freeman

As a teacher librarian, I saw firsthand the connection readers had with Megan E. Freeman’s book ALONE. It was always checked out, and readers of all interest areas were captivated by the ‘novel in verse’ writing style as well as the storyline.
AWAY is no different. Published in February, it is the story of four kids from Colorado who all find themselves in a relocation camp due to an emergency evacuation. However, the government is not forthcoming about what, why, or how long they will be locked away from the outside world. Riveting.
Each of their stories is told with such a unique voice and format. My favorite is Teddy’s story. He’s an aspiring filmmaker and communicates what’s happening as though you’re reading a script for a play. A key point. He documents their journey on film. Harmony is a journalist who seeks truth and writes news articles and letters to her aunt back East. This book reminds me of the classic Nothing But the Truth, by Avi, as the story comes together through dialogue, news releases, letters, etc. Also, what is the truth, and why are they being held against their will?
References to the Wizard of Oz are mentioned throughout the story, always wondering who is behind the ‘curtain’? Who is really in charge and manipulating the lives of thousands of people? Working together, these four strangers find answers.
It’s also enlightening to see all the references to classic movies that have pursued truth and the underdog. All The President’s Men. Erin Brockovich. Spotlight. The Insider. Silkwood, etc.
Please read this latest work of art by Megan E. Freeman. It is one of those stories that underscores how important it is to remain curious, to think for ourselves, and not to grow complacent.
This book, too, will never be on the shelves!
